We detected cfDNA somatic mutations in combination with protein markers to efficiently identify early-stage HCC from asymptomatic HBsAg-seropositive individuals in a community population.

AFP and ultrasound

We designed an assay to analyze multiple types of genetic variation in parallel so that 2 mL of plasma is sufficient to achieve high sensitivity in detecting cfDNA mutations.The assay successfully identified 4 early-stage HCC cases (<3 cm) from 331 HBsAg(+) individuals based on negative serum AFP and ultrasonography.
 

hepatocellular carcinoma

The positive predictive value was 17%, which was much higher than previous studies.This article shows that the combination of cfDNA and serum protein markers holds great promise for the early detection of HCC in community-based populations.
